While Christie being abandoned by her real parents is a sad story, it was fairly common (due to the aforementioned one child policy) for parents to abandon or otherwise “get rid” of female children in order to try again and have a boy. The same was true for disabled children, who were also often abandoned.

So, anyways, Christie McCarthy (who goes by Christie McFit online) was adopted by a single mom in the United States and grew up in the suburbs of New Jersey. Though it was a better upbringing for her than it would have been had she stayed outside that police station in China; she remembers being relentlessly teased for being Asian.
